Service Description

West Coast Swing Wednesday’s is a twice monthly event hosted by 207 Westie at the Midcoast Strong Studio at 143 Maverick St in Rockland. Come and West Coast Swing the way you want. Each week will be different and will fit the desires of those that attend. - Want to learn some basics? Sure Thing. - Want to figure out something you have been struggling with? Let’s do it. - Want to just dance? We will be playing some great west coast swing tunes. All experience levels are welcome. Wondering what West Coast Swing is???? West Coast Swing is a partner dance with roots in the Lindy Hop. It is characterized by an elastic look that results from its extension-compression technique of partner connection and is danced primarily in a slotted area on the dance floor. The dance allows for both partners to improvise steps while dancing together, putting West Coast Swing in a short list of dances that emphasize improvisation. Most importantly, West Coast Swing can be danced to many music genres including Blues, R&B, and current Pop music. 207 Westie is a group led by Steve & Amy Hand focused on promoting West Coast Swing dancing throughout Maine. It didn’t take long, and Steve was studying many different styles of dance throughout Maine and across the country. After a few years, he started to co-teach classes with Katie Tranzillo and accelerated his studies with national professionals Cindy-Lee Overton and Angel Figueroa. Until the fall of 2017, Steve was splitting his free time between ice hockey (coaching, playing and refereeing) and dancing. In early October, he learned he had to stop skating due to knee problems. Fortunately, Steve was attending a west coast swing intensive with Angel that weekend and over a few drinks at the bar, Angel convinced Steve to transfer his years of coaching experience to teaching dance. Today, Steve focuses on teaching several styles of dance with a focus on west coast swing, east coast swing and salsa. Steve actively promotes dances around Maine and also runs a couple dance related Facebook groups (Midcoast Dance and 207 Westie).
